San Francisco Sheriff’s Department announces to hire 200 deputies and staff members for jails, hospitals and courts
(SAN FRANCISCO) The San Francisco Sheriff's Department is hiring 200 deputies and staff members to meet the needs for services at the County jails, courts and hospitals.
Sheriff Paul Miyamoto announced the release of the 2022 Sheriff’s Office Recruitment Video on December 8 in order to get more attention from the potential applicants.
During the past several years, the San Francisco Sheriff's Department has been no different from the city's Police Department and other law enforcement agencies in the nation facing the shortage of sworn personnel and hiring challenges.
Earlier this year, Ken Lombo, President of San Francisco Deputy Sheriffs’ Association (SFDSA), issued an open letter to demand more hiring of deputies. "Staffing in the San Francisco Jails has become dangerously unsafe with inmates attacking inmates, nurses, sheriff deputies and civilian employees. The San Francisco Sheriff’s Office and City and County of San Francisco have understaffed the jails to a dangerously low level, they have not prioritized funding to hire deputies, they have not even prioritized retention of current deputies," Lomba said in the letter.
Miyamoto announced the latest recruitment drive and the production of the video which is aimed to boost the staffing levels that have been at a historic low over the past two years. “We need qualified candidates who are passionate about serving the people of San Francisco,” said Miyamoto.
“We have positions open for 192 deputies, 27 professional staff members, and 23 cadets,” said Miyamoto of the recruitment goal. Miyamoto, first Asian Sheriff in the history of San Francisco, encouraged more minorities and women to apply.
“Our efforts are also focused on bolstering the recruitment and retention of women at the San Francisco Sheriff's Office,” Miyamoto said. “That’s why we’ve partnered with the national 30x30 Initiative to increase the number of women in law enforcement by 30% by the year 2030.”
The video, which features 75 deputies and staff members, tells the public a variety of job natures and assignments for all the deputies, from providing security at County Jails, to serving as court bailiffs and working side by side with community members in the events.
Miyamoto is in the video to share his work experience as the top Sheriff in the department.
The starting salary for a sheriff’s deputy ranges between $84,448-$171,224, depending on experience and training.
The recruitment video can be found at the "Join The Team" webpage on the department's website, www.sfsheriff.com.
