Supervisor Matt Haney announces in Chinatown running for State Assembly/District 17

(SAN FRANCISCO) District Six Supervisor Matt Haney was quick to announce his plan to run for State Assembly District 17 on the next day after Mayor London Breed appointed Assemblymember David Chiu to the City Attorney position on September 29.
Haney announced his campaign for State Assembly in front of the Lion's Den Lounge and Bar in Chinatown to succeed Chiu. "Why I chose to first announce my decision in Chinatown, because it is a culture hub in the city. This community has been hit hard during the pandemic and also by the violence against them."
"Chinese students made up the largest number in the city. They should be valued and should not be attacked. I will continue fighting for more investment for the community, like Assemblymember Phil Ting who was successful in securing $26.5 million to transform a building into a new art center in Chinatown," said Haney.
Assembly District 17 comprises Chinatown, Portola, Visitacion Valley and Excelsior with large Asian population. Haney said he would hire more Asian and Chinese American staffers if he gets elected.
Haney was elected to San Francisco School Board in 2012 for six years before he was elected to the Board of Supervisors in 2018. He represents the Tenderloin and South of Market which have a growing number of Asian population.
Haney is a graduate of UC Berkeley, Stanford University Law School and has a master degree in Education.
