(SAN FRANCISCO) Over the weekend in Excelsior neighborhood, Supervisors Ahsha Safai and Connie Chan held a joint press conference to announce their endorsements for Assemblymember Kevin Mullin who will run for the House of Representative in California District 15 in June Primary Election.

Under the new redistricting map in effect in 2022 for the congressional districts, the California 15th District expands from the Northern region in San Mateo County to the Southern part of San Francisco, including Excelsior, Visitacion Valley and Portola which are Asian neighborhoods.

Congresswoman Jackie Speier who represents the 14th District for the past 14 years announced her retirement in November last year for not seeking re-election . California Assemblymember Kevin Mullin who represents San Mateo County and serves as Assembly Speaker pro Tem since 2014 is one of the candidates running for Congress to succeed Speier.

District 1 Supervisor Chan representing Richmond District in San Francisco worked at Mullin’s Assembly Office before she was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in November 2020. Chan is the first Supervisor in San Francisco to endorse Mullin in the June Congressional Primary Election.

“Supervisor Chan and I disagree on issues, but we talk and work very hard.” District 11 Supervisor Safai who represents Excelsior said in the press conference. ”We agree that Assemblymember Kevin Mullin is the best candidate to represent our district in Congress.”

“This neighborhood is about seniors, families, children. We have the second highest homeownership in the City. Kevin (Mullin) had lived in this district and he had worked for the Congresswoman (Speier),” said Safai. “He is an educator. He comes from a labor family.”

Mullin was born in South San Francisco and elected as its City Councilman before he was elected to the Assembly in 2012. Mullin has been serving in the State Assembly for nine years.

Mullin has spent most of his time in San Mateo County, but he is not new to San Francisco. He went to San Francisco State University and University of San Francisco for higher education. “I lived in this neighborhood for some time. I am proud to represent this neighborhood,” said Mullin.

“Education is important. I was a teacher. Small businesses are struggling. I support to have continued funding for them. Asians are targeted in the hate crime incidents, I support the funding for stopping the hate attacks,” said Mullin. “I will bring all these concerns to the Congress.”
